A Yardstick for Measuring the Growth of a Team


As a group begins its life, and at several points during its growth, the leader and members might reflect on the followinggroup characteristics and spend some time sharing the data that are collected. Through rating each characteristic, it is possible to get a general picture of the perceptions that various members have about the team and how it is developing. It is also possible to identify difficulties that may be blocking progress:

A. Goal clarity
1. no apparent goals 2. goal confusion 3. average goal clarity 4. goals mostly clear 5. goals very clear

B. Trust and openness
1. none 2. little 3. average 4. considerable 5. remarkable

C. Empathy among member
1. none 2. little 3. average 4. considerable 5. remarkable

D. Balance between group task and maintenance needs
1. none 2. little 3. average 4. considerable 5. excellent

E. Meeting leadership needs.
1. none 2. some 3. average 4. good 5. excellent

F. Decision making
1. unable to make decisions 2. inadequate 3. average 4. good 5. full consensus

G. Use of group resources (knowledge, skills, experiences)
1. not used 2. poor use 3. average use 4. good use 5. full use

H. Sense of belonging
1. none 2. some 3. average 4. good 5. strong
