A Convocation on TIMSS

November 19-21, 1999

National Academy of Sciences
Washington, DC

The Center for Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Education (CSMEE) at the National Research Council (NRC) is holding a convocation on the Third International Mathematics & Science Study (TIMSS). The gathering is for state and district science and mathematics leaders who are committed to using information and results from TIMSS to improve instruction and learning. It is the capstone event for "Global Perspectives for Local Action: Using TIMSS to Improve U.S. Mathematics and Science Education," a project funded by the U.S. Department of Education.

The NRC Committee on TIMSS that is chaired by Mel George, former president of the University of Missouri and St. Olaf College, is producing a comprehensive report on TIMSS and a companion professional development guide. Participants in the convocation will receive these materials and will attend a workshop based on the guide. In addition, the convocation will include two dinner sessions, with presentations by researchers associated with the work of TIMSS; a poster session by states and districts who have used data and analysis from TIMSS to help in the improvement of mathematics and science instruction and learning; and job-alike sessions for networking and planning.
