TIMSS Resource Kit

The U.S. Department of Education recently released Attaining Excellence: A TIMSS Resource Kit. It is designed to help people use the findings of the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) to improve education. TIMSS is the largest, most comprehensive, and rigorous international comparison of education ever undertaken.

The resource kit contains four modules for promoting analysis, discussion, and action around the information from the TIMSS study. The Overview module is an introduction to the purpose and findings of TIMSS. It includes a 13-minute video summary of Pursuing Excellence: U.S. Eighth-Grade Findings from TIMSS. The Achievement module presents in-depth eighth-grade student achievement results for the 41 countries who participated in the study and offers a benchmarking guide that facilitates reflection about U.S. student achievement in comparison to students in other TIMSS countries. The design of the Teaching module is centered on an 80-minute videotape of six eighth-grade mathematics lessonsÊÑÊone algebra and one geometry lesson from the United States, Japan, and Germany. The module includes a moderatorÕs guide for leading workshops using the video cases. The Curricula module contains an overview of curriculum reform and a guidebook to evaluate and analyze curricula.

In cooperation with the other nine Eisenhower Regional Consortia and the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse, the Regional Alliance will be sponsoring workshops for educators using the Resource Kit to improve math and science teaching and learning. The Regional Alliance will also be working with state math and science supervisors, math and science teacher organizations, and State Systemic Initiatives (SSIs) to make TIMSS resources available to more schools and districts. For information about state and regional sessions or to discuss setting up a workshop, contact Mark Kaufman at TERC, alliance@terc.edu
